- Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) eliminates the directional effects of anisotropic diffusion
and provides pure diffusion information. Diffusion movements of free protons are used to describe
their microenvironment. Tractography is the method displaying 3 -dimensional images of white matter
tracts or similar tubular structures by using the tensor data. Anatomical structures that cannot be
monitored on conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging become visible by means of the diffusion
properties restricted in certain directions. By this way, more information can be obtained about
the anatomical structures, as well as their relationship with pathological conditions, and also provides
neuro-protective surgical interventions and their follow-up after treatment. Basically they are reserved
for the brain and particularly white matter and its diseases but also there are increasing applications
in heart, skeletal muscle, prostate gland, adrenal medulla, breast, spinal cord and peripheral
nerves. DTI and MR tractography, are not only used for the diagnostic purposes but also for the treatment,
and their area of usage increasing day by day by the intent of new technical developments
